Half Assed Avengers Week! Monday!

We start with a bang.  Here we have a brief scene involving Black Widow.  It has been described by some as "jiggly" and those people are right.  But it is also bad ass.  I think they made a really good choice with Scarlett Johansson, she was awesome in the role in Iron Man 2 and from what I see she continues to own the role.  Although seeing the army they're up against I don't know how a badass kung fu chick with pistols can help but I'm sure it'll be awesome.

Half Assed Avengers Week!

So I was planning this whole big week to celebrate what looks to be the awesome Avengers movie.  However Department H has been keeping me super busy which led to this week kind of creeping up on me.  So this will be a half assed Avengers week.  This will probably amount to me posting trailers or random You Tube stuff.  I really imagined it being better and I'm pretty sure it's the thought that counts.  So let's just pretend it was this awesome week long event and it was totally awesome and we all totally got laid.

My commitments to Department H prevent me from going to Avengers on opening day but I will be there on Sunday with a review.  That's right, I will be the last with a review, so come here after you've read all the reviews and spoilers for 2 days to get news you could have gotten anywhere at any time before then.

I'm starting to have doubts about Half Assed Avengers week...

Cracked Superhero breakdown, go ahead and give it to me

For those of you not familiar with Cracked they have a lot of great content in general but sometimes they throw something obscure for us comic book nerks (a word I just now made up).  Here are some highlights from what is most likely a long list of content from them.

The 8 Most Awkward Sexual Moments in Comic Book History

The 8 Most Cringe-Worthy Comic Book Movie Moments

The 7 Crappiest "Super Heroes" in Comic Book History

The 6 Creepiest Sexual Encounters in Comic Book History

20 Downsides to Being a Superhero's Parent

The 5 Creepiest Sex Scenes in Comics

I'm sure there's more out there but this is as good a start as any.  If you like it do what Fancy Deadpool does and check them out daily, there's usually at least one good thing to read on there a day.

Elektra (2005) Blu-Ray Directors cut

Rating: 2 out of 5 sai’s thrown through a ninja with super powers

Plot Synopsis:  The Hand wants a little girl, because, hey who doesn’t want a little girl and Elektra gets involved.  Much ninjaing and hot Jennifer Garner follows.  Plus it’s got Shang Tsung and Zod in it.

Daredevil Month bonus content: Elektra (The Hand & The Devil)

Just as Daredevil '83 was our foreplay for Daredevil month, Elektra (The Hand & The Devil) is our lubing up for the Elektra movie.  This one took a few tries to watch but I'm glad I gave it the several chances.  The main stopping point for me was Bullseye, the actor's got the swagger but not the acting chops.  Don't get me wrong, acting is hard, it's not an easy thing to do so I give credit where credit is due but his performance does little for me.  Kim Santiago as Elektra does good in the role and makes an admittedly ridiculous costume look good.  Plus she looks way more Greek than freaking Jennifer Garner.  The opening fight is well choreographed and taken from the comics, which isn't a bad thing at all, and the fight with Daredevil is well choreographed as well.

This comes before Daredevil '83 as far as production date but the Daredevil costume is, in my opinion, so much better than the one featured in '83.  However we have a different person playing Daredevil, which may explain it.  He does good but if I have to choose between Adam Shorsten (this short's Daredevil) or Nick Grock ('83's Daredevil) I'm taking Nick Grock.  That being said Adam Shorsten's got SKILLS.  SKILLS that pay bills son.  He does a series of flips that look pretty impressive.  I can't say why I like Grock better but I do, I found him instantly likable in the role and he quickly became my go to Daredevil.  But if we could take Shorsten's atheletic prowess and give them to Grock, why, we'd create a damn near perfect Daredevil.  The usual strengths are present here, soundtrack and cinematography.  Also I was surprised by the Marvel style comic book open, nice touch.  Check it out.  Since there's nothing extra to add there'll be no jump, just the usual Blinky website link and IMDB.

Daredevil (2003) Blu-Ray Directors cut

Rating: 4 out 5 origins shared with ninja turtles

Plot Synopsis:  Matt Murdock is the Daredevil, this is mostly an origin story so we get some background, a little bit of lawyerin’, and a little bit of Daredevilin’.  Basically Kingpin get’s Bullseye to the Greek and Daredevil get’s wrapped up in the middle of it.

The Batman season 5's funniest moments

  Another seasons of funny moments.

The Batman season 4's funniest moments

I never watched the show but it doesn't seem to have gotten real good until the later season as stuff like this doesn't really exist before season 4.  Or maybe season 3.  Whatever...

Playstation Spider-Man ending

You're always laughing at me but who's crying now.

Patient J

Patient J in it's totality.

Joker Christmas Special

I like this guy as the more classic style Joker.  Pretty good, Bat in the Sun has done a bunch of Batman related videos, Patient J being probably the best.

Saturday Morning Watchmen

The Watchmen as seen as one of those terrible 90's cartoon shows they made about everything.  I'm kind of surprised they didn't actually make this.

Harley Quinn Arkham Asylum trailer

The Harley Quinn trailer, they made a lot of these and they're all pretty bad ass.

The Joker trailer from Arkham Asylum

Arkham Asylum was an awesome game as were all the trailers associated with it.

Lobo's Paramilitary Christmas

The comic this is based off of is pretty bad ass.  The guy playing Lobo is totally awesome and for the limited budget it must of had it looks great.

Grayson

The boy wonder goes out on his own to get vengeance for Batman's death.  This works really well as a trailer but I don't know how it would work as a feature.  It seems to cram everyone it can into 5 minutes which may not translate to a coherent plot.  Really well done though, one of my favorites.

Youtubin' Saturday

I'm taking the evening to do some tubin'.  Tonight, since I'm feeling nostalgic I'm revisiting a bunch of my favorite comic book trailers, fan movies and comic related stuff.  I'll post each separately because, does it really matter.  It's been a long week and I'm tired but I feel like posting so I'm doing this as a lazy alternative, as opposed to something creative and original that requires, you know, effort.  Enjoy.

Twitter cosplay a'splosion y'all pt. 2 where I talk mostly to Gail Simone

I woke up this morning to discover, what is hopefully the last dying flames of this whole thing.  If it's not that's fine however this will be the last I'll say about it here because I don't want to feed the fire anymore.  I am open to discussion if people want to have mature, intelligent discussion but keep in mind I can, and will, delete posts that don't contribute to that.  Or maybe just make fun of you.  Both options are entertaining to me.  Alright, some highlights and comments after the jump.

Bonus Content for Daredevil month: Daredevil '83

As added content this week we take a look at the talented Mr. Notarile's Daredevil '83.  He's made this and an Elektra short, which will go up as bonus next week to compliment the Elektra movie.  I was originally going to do a full review of it but decided that due to it's length I'd just feature it with some comments.

It's another good outing, the strengths of this include it's soundtrack and the cinematography, those are simply the strongest things about all of the Blinky500 short films that I've seen so far.  The acting is good, Nick Grock is good as Daredevil, Mandy Evans does great as Typhoid Mary (certainly better than the Elektra movie version).  We also get a special guest appearance by my favorite Punisher Shawn Parr who shows up at the beginning to call Daredevil's classic dark red and yellow costume gay.  Which it was.  I'm glad someone had the balls to point it out.  The biggest weakness is the fight choreography but you really can't rail on it too much, the man's not working with a huge budget with experienced stuntmen and the actors are doing all their own fighting, which isn't easy.  It looks easy but I can tell you from experience it's not fucking easy.  What's easy about choreographing a fight is getting hit for realsies and nobody wants that.  So I don't blame them for slowing it down and taking it easy.  Otherwise, it's a strong showing with a great, awkward and unsettling dance number around the middle.  Check it out.  Video repost with Chris' comments cut and pasted from his youtube page as well as a link to said youtube after the jump.

Something I forgot in the cosplay a'splosion

I wanted to include this in the last article.  In the apology article The Avengers Initiative is mentioned.  Doing a modicum of research shows that these guys do good work.  Check them out here and here.  Like them, follow them, I can't find if there's a way to donate but they are worth supporting.

Twitter cosplay a'splosion y'all!

So I check my Twitter today because, well, I have very little else to do and I find a comment by Gail Simone that instantly got me curious.

"Well shit." I think, I just put up something about cosplay.  I know it ain't me because, frankly, I'm terribly unpopular, and rightfully so.  But as I continued to read her passion over this it made me wonder if my own stance on cosplaying was somehow wrong.  So I did some research to figure out what is behind all this, highlights and my thoughts after the jump.

A kick to your ears ass.

Was youtubin' and found these.  I love them so I thought I'd share.  What do they have to do with superheroes?  Shit...I don't know...um... Gigantic is about the Hulk and Where is my Mind is about Monsieur Mallah.  There, now they're relevant.

Some Seanbaby fo' yo' face.

I found this on Cracked, written by the very talented, perhaps even more talented than I, Seanbaby about superheroes who lost their shit. Title and intro included, if you like then follow the link and give the views to Cracked. I won't steal their content... wholly anyway.

6 Superheroes Who Completely Lost Their Shit

By: Seanbaby

April 16, 2009

One of the things Stan Lee is credited with in Marvel comics is how he made superheroes relatable. He took larger-than-life characters and gave them human problems. After Spider-Man is done insulating his fists to punch someone with an electric face, he gets picked last for kickball as Peter Parker. That's something a reader can wrap their head around. Like when Thor goes to the drug store and can't find a human condom to fit his screaming Nordic penis. "By Odin's all-seeing eye, I can give to my loins only this empty grocery bag, and to you only this heeding: Valhalla awaits your birth canal!"
Before Stan Lee, comics related to kids by just having the heroes hang out with kids, usually without pants. I'm not sure when gay was invented, but it definitely wasn't around when the people at DC finalized the Robin costume. So Stan Lee's idea to add character flaws to superheroes may have saved Marvel comics readers a generation of half-naked little boy sidekicks. However, as the years went by, not all the writers at Marvel were exactly responsible with this concept. The character flaws of caped crusaders soon escalated into full-blown psychological problems which made most of their adventures a series of emotional breakdowns. Here are six of my favorites.

Bonus: Featured Cosplayer

To kick off the newest upcoming weekly thing is this featured person.  Meagan Marie (formerly Meagan VanBurkleo) shown here as Zatanna.  She does pretty good work.  The costuming is good, the photo's are tasteful and she seems to know her stuff.  So check her out at her website or jump right to the cosplay.

The Punisher (2005) PS2

Rating: 3 out of 5 loaded pistols in your waistband

Plot Synopsis:  During his midnight stroll/punk beating Frank gets challenged by a street thug.  Never one to back down from the drug fueled cursing of a junkie The Punisher kills pretty much everyone in a crack house, many in terrible, terrible ways.  This somehow leads to him killing lots and lots of gangsters, many in terrible, terrible ways.  Also he gets arrested at some point.

The rest of Max Landis on youtube

A little while ago I posted the Death and Return of Superman by Max Landis.  Before that he did some other commentaries about comics in a slightly different tone.  These are definitely the warm up for the Death and Return... video but they are pretty good in their own right.  So here they are in one place, we start with the first one and the rest are after the jump.

Drunk Comic History: The Robin's

Site (blog?) update

As you may have noticed I'm putting a lot of stuff from memebase up.  The whole reason I started this was to sort of compile what I like about the comic stuff in one place so I can have easy access to it all.  So you'll probably being seeing more of it, feel free to ignore it if you find it unoriginal and lazy.  I mean it is and I know it and I plan to get lazier and less original, as time permits.  This will include featuring other types of fan art, comic art, cosplay and what not.  Because, why the hell not.  It'll all be bonus, the only 'official' entries are the reviews that are posted every Sunday.  Everything else is gravy.

Also I'm trying to include some more pictures to go with entries.  To that end I'm trying my hand at photo manipulation, because, again, why the hell not.  It makes the entries a bit more entertaining to look at if it's more than a wall of text.  Of course it won't make the actual content any better, it'll just look nicer.  These will be horrible, I'm hoping at some point I'll get the hang of it and they'll get better but I'm okay with the idea of them never getting better.  Anyway, I say all this so if anyone is actually reading this I know how what's going on and how mediocre some of it is, so feel free to keep it to yourself.  It's the internet, you can read what you want and ignore everything else.

Finally I know I've been reviewing some pretty good stuff lately which may not be as entertaining to read as the crap, but don't worry, I've got some crap in the pipeline (heh, heh, heh).  Coming up is Daredevil month, which may get pushed aside for Fantastic Four weeks.  Now, I liked the Daredevil films and the Fantastic Four movies but both series have some real bad ones in them (you'll know it when you see it).  After that I'll be getting into DC for the first time with the original Batman series (2 Tim Burton and 2 Joel Shumacher) and the Superman series with Christopher Reeves.  Both good series that start out really strong and then sort of fizzle out.  I got plans sports fans, I got plans.  So stayed tune Deadheads.

I don't know... the Batman and Robin one was pretty cool too...

Department H is keeping me pretty busy with assignments so I wasn't able to get around to even watching the premiere's on Sunday.  Hopefully I can write some quick reviews between missions as the week goes on.  Until then enjoy these lazy, talent-less (on my part) reposts of stuff from the far more creative Memebase!

If I made it: Punisher: War Journal (Xbox 360/PS3)

The Punisher: War Journal

Outline:  A new mob has come in and they’re trying to take back New York.  They’re brutal return gets the full attention of Frank Castle who decides that they should become his sole focus on his war against crime.  You get to play Frank Castle, you stalk, plan and execute the heads of the new mob one by one while at the same time trying to keep the streets of New York clean from pushers, pimps and killers.

Sunday content frenzy

I once again feel like posting.  So today you're going to get a brand new segment, I think, are they called segments on the internet?  It's segment like I suppose.  It's sort of a reoccurring topic thingy.  Anyway, it's called "If I Made It".  This is where I either display my genius or demonstrate my stupidity by telling you how I would make something.  I'm a man of limited means so I can't make the things I want to see, I have to leave it to people more talented and motivated than myself.  But I don't think that stops me from having good ideas.  If you are a person of means then feel free to take influence from these.  The bottom line is I want to play these games, see these movies/TV shows or collect these action figures.

If you take this intellectual penny then at least let me know, if you want to leave an intellectual penny in the form of recognition when the project is complete that would be the ethical and moral thing to do.  If you want to compensate me for my ideas, well then friend, that would be ideal.  But since I'm posting them for the world to steal I can't expect anything back from them and I certainly can't be mad if they're taken.  Especially if they lead to a world with better content.

Also Ultimate Spider-Man and the new season of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes premiere today.  Since I missed the early morning showing I'm going to catch the evening showing and post my thoughts.  If I'm particular motivated I might do full reviews.  So that's you're bonus content frenzy update.  Also enjoy today's scheduled, authorized and standard update in the Punisher (2004) review, probably buried under all this bonus content.

The Punisher (2004) DVD (extended cut)
