Cosplay Wednesday 5/1/13 - C2E2 Bonus

I was at C2E2 last weekend, which is why there was no post, but I managed to get exactly 2 pictures of cosplayers.  Next time I'll definitely take more pictures, this recent cosplay political stuff made me very gun shy about asking people to get a photo since I now feel like I'm somehow exploiting them and contributing to their victimization.  Which is dumb and I hate feeling that way but when I saw these two, on separate occasions, my fanboy got too big to hold back.  I hope to put up something about my experience this week sometime.  There was also a G'Nort, I saw him walking a few aisles away but never managed to find him again, if I had I would have gotten a picture of him as well.  I took two of each, the second ones after the jump.

Patch is my favorite version of Wolverine so when I saw him I HAD to get a photo

The only Squirrel Girl I saw, she's probably one of my favorite characters ever (1 or 2 tied with maybe She-Hulk).  So again, when I saw the costume I had to get a picture

Fan Film Friday bonus: Avenger's Luke Cage

Since you can't have Iron Fist without Power Man and since you can't have the bad without the good here's the opposite of the Iron Fist feature.  A brief fan trailer that showcases Eric Thomas Wilson as Luke Cage.  Well shot, well acted, the effects are good the guy playing Cage looks, talks and acts the part.  There's even a Sweet Christmas.  Why couldn't they turn this into an 8 minute film?  Hell, why couldn't they turn this into a feature film.

Bonus: Blinky Deadpool webseries

So this is the first episode of the Blinky Deadpool webseries. I've got to say it's pretty dang good.  Mandy Evans returns as Typhoid Mary.  She plays it well and holy crap can she dance.  We already kind of knew that but she puts her talent on display during her introduction in Wade's "Pool-o-Vision".  Deadpool is played in costume by Damian Vargas with voice by Chris .R. Notarile.  It's good, there's a fight scene between Mary and Pool and it's well done.  There's a cameo from Elektra and Domino that promises to turn into something more.  It's all done very well, the usual Chris strengths are on display here, yadda yadda yadda.  If you don't know the kind of quality and awesomeness you can expect from Chris .R. Notarile then I suggest you read any one of my other reviews of his stuff.

Mostly what I want to get down to is the portrayal of Deapool himself.  They nailed it.  Most people try to make Deadpool TOO random.  They think random is funny or that random is what embodies Deadpool.  Deadpool is not random, Deadpool is fucking crazy.  There's a huge difference, it's not about saying weird shit just to say weird shit, it's about having totally different perspective on reality and acting as if everyone else lives in the same reality or at the very least not caring that you're the only person in that reality.  This does not translate to "random".  It translates to snarky, sarcastic, self deprecating and socially awkward.  He has a talent for doing things he thinks are cool and saying the exact wrong or unexpected thing.  Just to quickly wrap this up because I just want you all to watch it, it's a good 10 minutes spent, they really got the source material and it'll be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Happy Fantastic Fourth of July!

I threw this together because it's something I've been meaning to do and today's a holiday for me so I've got the time.  It's pretty much all the Doom scenes from the Corman Fantastic Four.  It's 14 minutes long.  I haven't even watched the final product.  I did the grabs, linked the files in Vegas and posted it.  From what little I did watch it's terrible.  So happy 4th...enjoy?

Choice Feature: Chris R. Notarile interview

I was somehow able to con Chris R. Notarile into answering some questions about his excellent short Choice.  What you are about to read is the result of a 10 hour stand off and the exchange of multiple hostages, so YOU BETTER APPRECIATE THE LENGTHS I GO TO FOR YOU!

Fancy Deadpool:  First off introduce yourself to the people and give a little bit of background, who you are and what you do.

Chris. R. Notarile: My name is Chris .R. Notarile of Blinky Productions Inc. I am a filmmaker. I make movies for a living and have been doing so for almost a decade.

FDP:  The environment on the shoot seemed very emotional and intense. Did this change how you directed? I would have been afraid to break the mood with a cut or a retake or to offer suggestions. Did you direct as you normally would or did you rely more on your actresses and let it happen?

CRN:  I directed as I always do. We shoot until someone screws up. Then we take it back and do it again. The takes are actually pretty long in some parts of the film. I just let Mandy and Kerri go at it and give them notes accordingly. Then I shoot them from alternate angles until I had enough coverage. They were off book which is wonderful when shooting a film like this. You need to treat it like a play. You need to be rehearsed..... and they were. It was great.

FDP:  Do you think using actresses instead of actors changes the tone or the message of the film?

CRN:  Yes. 100%. The script was originally meant for two men, but I realized that the film would be more broad in its message if I had women doing the parts. It would also give it a better sense of reality. It's unfortunately common for actresses to be typecast in "hot babe" roles and that can really burden many women when they are trying to get taken seriously. As for Choice being female, well that was elementary. If the actress was female, Choice had to be as well to balance it out. Though, I feel that the look of Choice as a female was waaaay more eye catching than what I originally had for the male version. So I guess it all worked out.

FDP:  Due to Hollywood's obsession with death, untimely death in particular, do you think the choice presented in this film is one that a lot of young actors and actresses struggle with?

CRN:  Absolutely. I think a lot of saddened people view death as an easy way out. The trick is to keep going no matter how bad things may seem. And that's what the film is about too, seeing through the black and white into a shade of gray. The gray being the unknown where anything is possible.

FDP:  You said you had trouble casting the actresses for this film. What stood out about Mandy Evans and Kerri Miller? Was it instant or was it after working with them on other projects?

CRN:  Well I wrote the script back in 2008 long before I started working with either of them. When I decided to change the genders of the characters, I had an idea to cast twins. Unfortunately I could not find a set of female twins that could act. Then when I began working with Mandy, I cast her initially as the actress, but then felt her better as Choice. It was Mandy who subsequently recommended Kerri and I thought to myself "DUH! Of course!"

FDP:  Do people care about talent anymore?

CRN:  Choice was rejected from the Tribeca Film Festival while another movie entitled Ticked Off Trannies With Knives got accepted. So you tell me.

(on a side note I could write a whole article about this but I'll shorten it by simply saying "I blame Grindhouse.")

FDP:  The final message is rather positive, does this reflect your personal viewpoint? Is it important to remain sort of the eternal optimist when working in the film industry?

CRN:  Yes that is definitely my personal outlook not only on the film industry, but on life. What's the point in being pessimistic? It gets you no where and just makes you more depressed. Some hide behind the phrase "realist" which I think is utter bullshit. If you have a negative outlook or think that you are not going to achieve your dreams if you try, then you're a pessimist. People need to keep trying despite the odds. Even if you fail miserably, at least you can say you tried. And I'd rather die a poor unknown, struggling filmmaker than live a long mundane life working a 9-5 job that I never wanted. You only get one shot at living, you might as well make the most of it.

FDP:  Do you have anything upcoming that you'd like to promote? I noticed on your site that you have an upcoming feature called Stand Off that looks pretty promising (and reunites you with the 2 actresses of Choice). Beyond that it looks like you have a feature titled Perfect. Any comments on either of these projects? I've linked to your website many times, is there anywhere else people can go to keep updated on what you're working on? Feel free to shill whatever you want as hard as you want, you won't embarrass me. That's impossible after the Central Park incident.

CRN:  Well Stand Off was actually filmed before we did Choice. Choice WAS the reuniting. But yes, Stand Off will be coming to DVD later this year or next year. I cannot say for sure as I am still working on a distribution deal. As for Perfect, that is my third feature, that will star Mandy Evans, Roberto Lombardi and a lot of my usual suspects. Bonus: Featured Cosplayer

This is Yaya Han, seen here as Scarlet Witch (which is the first cosplay I saw her do).  She got enough attention from cosplaying that Marvel did an article on her (here).  She seems to know her stuff, she makes her own costumes, she's passionate and she puts in the effort.  If you got some time check her out.

Daredevil Month bonus content: Elektra (The Hand & The Devil)

Just as Daredevil '83 was our foreplay for Daredevil month, Elektra (The Hand & The Devil) is our lubing up for the Elektra movie.  This one took a few tries to watch but I'm glad I gave it the several chances.  The main stopping point for me was Bullseye, the actor's got the swagger but not the acting chops.  Don't get me wrong, acting is hard, it's not an easy thing to do so I give credit where credit is due but his performance does little for me.  Kim Santiago as Elektra does good in the role and makes an admittedly ridiculous costume look good.  Plus she looks way more Greek than freaking Jennifer Garner.  The opening fight is well choreographed and taken from the comics, which isn't a bad thing at all, and the fight with Daredevil is well choreographed as well.

This comes before Daredevil '83 as far as production date but the Daredevil costume is, in my opinion, so much better than the one featured in '83.  However we have a different person playing Daredevil, which may explain it.  He does good but if I have to choose between Adam Shorsten (this short's Daredevil) or Nick Grock ('83's Daredevil) I'm taking Nick Grock.  That being said Adam Shorsten's got SKILLS.  SKILLS that pay bills son.  He does a series of flips that look pretty impressive.  I can't say why I like Grock better but I do, I found him instantly likable in the role and he quickly became my go to Daredevil.  But if we could take Shorsten's atheletic prowess and give them to Grock, why, we'd create a damn near perfect Daredevil.  The usual strengths are present here, soundtrack and cinematography.  Also I was surprised by the Marvel style comic book open, nice touch.  Check it out.  Since there's nothing extra to add there'll be no jump, just the usual Blinky website link and IMDB.

Bonus Content for Daredevil month: Daredevil '83

As added content this week we take a look at the talented Mr. Notarile's Daredevil '83.  He's made this and an Elektra short, which will go up as bonus next week to compliment the Elektra movie.  I was originally going to do a full review of it but decided that due to it's length I'd just feature it with some comments.

It's another good outing, the strengths of this include it's soundtrack and the cinematography, those are simply the strongest things about all of the Blinky500 short films that I've seen so far.  The acting is good, Nick Grock is good as Daredevil, Mandy Evans does great as Typhoid Mary (certainly better than the Elektra movie version).  We also get a special guest appearance by my favorite Punisher Shawn Parr who shows up at the beginning to call Daredevil's classic dark red and yellow costume gay.  Which it was.  I'm glad someone had the balls to point it out.  The biggest weakness is the fight choreography but you really can't rail on it too much, the man's not working with a huge budget with experienced stuntmen and the actors are doing all their own fighting, which isn't easy.  It looks easy but I can tell you from experience it's not fucking easy.  What's easy about choreographing a fight is getting hit for realsies and nobody wants that.  So I don't blame them for slowing it down and taking it easy.  Otherwise, it's a strong showing with a great, awkward and unsettling dance number around the middle.  Check it out.  Video repost with Chris' comments cut and pasted from his youtube page as well as a link to said youtube after the jump.

Something I forgot in the cosplay a'splosion

I wanted to include this in the last article.  In the apology article The Avengers Initiative is mentioned.  Doing a modicum of research shows that these guys do good work.  Check them out here and here.  Like them, follow them, I can't find if there's a way to donate but they are worth supporting.

Twitter cosplay a'splosion y'all!

So I check my Twitter today because, well, I have very little else to do and I find a comment by Gail Simone that instantly got me curious.

"Well shit." I think, I just put up something about cosplay.  I know it ain't me because, frankly, I'm terribly unpopular, and rightfully so.  But as I continued to read her passion over this it made me wonder if my own stance on cosplaying was somehow wrong.  So I did some research to figure out what is behind all this, highlights and my thoughts after the jump.

Some Seanbaby fo' yo' face.

I found this on Cracked, written by the very talented, perhaps even more talented than I, Seanbaby about superheroes who lost their shit. Title and intro included, if you like then follow the link and give the views to Cracked. I won't steal their content... wholly anyway.

6 Superheroes Who Completely Lost Their Shit

By: Seanbaby

April 16, 2009

One of the things Stan Lee is credited with in Marvel comics is how he made superheroes relatable. He took larger-than-life characters and gave them human problems. After Spider-Man is done insulating his fists to punch someone with an electric face, he gets picked last for kickball as Peter Parker. That's something a reader can wrap their head around. Like when Thor goes to the drug store and can't find a human condom to fit his screaming Nordic penis. "By Odin's all-seeing eye, I can give to my loins only this empty grocery bag, and to you only this heeding: Valhalla awaits your birth canal!"
Before Stan Lee, comics related to kids by just having the heroes hang out with kids, usually without pants. I'm not sure when gay was invented, but it definitely wasn't around when the people at DC finalized the Robin costume. So Stan Lee's idea to add character flaws to superheroes may have saved Marvel comics readers a generation of half-naked little boy sidekicks. However, as the years went by, not all the writers at Marvel were exactly responsible with this concept. The character flaws of caped crusaders soon escalated into full-blown psychological problems which made most of their adventures a series of emotional breakdowns. Here are six of my favorites.
